CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING

PLAY AREA

There is a space for quiet play to stimulate cognitive skills in young children. A puppet theatre, train table, and puzzles are available for use here.

COMPUTERS

Two AWE Learning Stations are available for playing pre-loaded educational games: an Early Literacy Station for Ages 2–8, and an AfterSchool Edge Station for Ages 6–12.

MUSEUM PASSES

Passes to area museums may be reserved and borrowed at the Reference Desk on the Lower Level. Reserve passes from home with our online reservation system.

TEACHERS & SCHOOLS

Class and teacher visits welcome! To schedule a group visit or to alert us about an upcoming homework assignment, please email Children’s Librarian Elisabeth Strachan. Miss Elisabeth is often available to visit schools and other organizations to share stories or talk about library services, with advance notice.

QUICK PICKS KIDS

No time? Let the Children’s Staff put together a Quick Pick book bundle for you! It’s easy.

  1. Call or complete the Quick Pick form – there are printed copies available at the library or you can fill out the online form here.
  2. The Children’s staff will pick 3-6 books based on your choices.
  3. You will be notified by email when your books are ready to pick up during regular library hours.

CHILDREN’S MATERIALS

BOOKS

Books circulate for two weeks and can usually be renewed up to two times. Includes books with read-along CDs.

DVDs and PLAYAWAY VIEWS

DVDs circulate for two weeks and may be renewed once. Playaway Views circulate for one week and may be renewed once.

AUDIOBOOKS

Audiobooks circulate for two weeks, and may be renewed once.

E-BOOKS & DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS

Borrow children’s eBooks and eAudiobooks through OverDrive and Hoopla. In addition, borrow music and watch streaming video through Hoopla.

VIDEOGAMES

Videogames can be checked out for one week and may be renewed once.

WORLD LANGUAGES

There is a small collection of children’s books in Chinese, Spanish, French and other languages other than English. Children’s materials in other languages may be requested from other libraries for pick-up here.

PARENTING MATERIALS

Books on issues such as sleeping, nutrition and education are available, as well as magazines such as Parents and FamilyFun.

REFERENCE

Dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases and more are available.

MUSIC CDs

Music CDs circulate for two weeks. There is a large selection of children’s music to choose from.

EARLY CHILDHOOD KITS

Early Childhood Kits circulate for two weeks, no renewals and no holds. Kits are designed for use at home by adults with young children, or for daycare lessons. Themes include Marc Brown’s Arthur, Dinosaurs, Music, Mexican Fiesta, and more.
